China Wins Robot Contest

China was crowned the champion of the Asia Pacific Robocon 2007 competition after an easy victory over Indonesia in yesterday’s final in Viet Nam.

Contestants in a game

It took the Chinese robot just one minute to create a V-for-victory shaped island on the court and seal the win.

In equal third place (called “second runners-up”) were Malaysia and the Republic of Korea. Thailand picked up the “Best Design” award and Japan the “Best Engineering” award.

Viet Nam fielded two teams, as allowed by the rules. The BKDC team from Da Nang Polytechnic University and DT03 from the Ha Noi University of Industry received three awards - one for “Best Idea” and a sponsor’s award each from Panasonic and Mitsumi.

The annual contest was started in 2002 by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union and involves 20 teams of tertiary-level students from 19 countries and territories. The idea is that the union’s members take it in turns to host the event.

Next year’s Asia Pacific Robocon will be held in the Indian city of Pune, again in August.
