| Climate change could prove catastrophic to Vietnam: experts |
|
| Flood in central province. | Vietnam is one of five countries that will be seriously affected by climate change and water-level rise, the World Bank has warned, with the Red River and Mekong deltas becoming submerged.
It has been estimated that if the oceans rises by one meter, 10 percent of the country’s population will be directly affected. GDP will fall by 10 percent and 40 thousand square kilometers of coastal regions will be flooded.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Monday has drawn up national targets in the fight against climate change.
The country’s average temperature has risen by 0.7 degrees Celsius in the last 50 years and the water level by 20 centimeters, Permanent Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Duc said.
