| Ho Chi Minh City temporarily stops buying livestock from infected farming localities |
With a variety of diseases affecting cattle and pigs (blue ear and foot-and-mouth) and poultry (bird flu), the HCMC People’s Committee has asked local authorities and relevant agencies to cooperate with provinces to protect the city from potentially hazardous contaminations. The origins and safety of livestock and poultry are being strictly checked before transport to the city and the sanitary conditions of slaughterhouses are being regularly inspected. An official from the city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said the city consumes about 650-700 cows and buffalos per day, 10,500-11,500 pigs, 100,000-110,000 chickens or ducks and some 2 million eggs. The city can only supply itself with 15-20 percent of the cattle it consumes.
