Thousands lose jobs in Quang Ngai, Phu Yen

Many workers have lost their jobs in the central provinces of Quang Ngai and Phu Yen, reports show January 8.

Many textile and garment companies are facing a tough time

Over 1,000 workers have lost their jobs in Quang Ngai province, said Hong Ha, deputy of Industrial Zone Management Board.

There are over 1,000 workers are in Quang Phu and Tinh Phong Industrial zones in Quang Ngai province. Companies in two industrial zones were unable to raise capital and have been in the red for some time, owing 3-5 months of salaries and social insurance.

Hong Phuoc Wood Processing Co. Ltd, in Quang Phu Industrial zone, has been declared bankrupt. The owner has absconded owing four months of salaries and money to banks.

The companies have said that a number of workers were laid off as a result of the global economic depression.

Currently there are 34 companies with nearly 8,000 workers in Tinh Phong and Quang Phu Industry zones, Quang Ngai province. However, fewer than 1,600 workers are paid social insurance.

Nearly 300 jobs have been made redundant in Phu Yen province, the manager of the Phu Yen Wage Control and Social Insurance Department, Trinh Anh Van, said.

Ms Van said that the economic crisis has forced many companies to reduce production. Six companies have laid-off a total of 297 workers. Various reasons have been cited.

Tan Hoa Binh Rattan Bamboo Cooperative laid-off 100 workers and Ba Hai Co. Ltd have cut staff by 65 workers in Phu Yen province.

There are currently 6,747 people employed at Hoa Hiep, An Phu and Song Cau northeastern industrial zones, Phu Yen province.
