HCMC customs detain 14.6kg of ivory trafficked from France
The Institute of Tropical Biology under the Academy of Science and Technology of Vietnam August 6 verified that three samples sent by Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department are African ivories.

Earlier, the Express Delivery Customs sub-department under the HCMC Customs Department detected three hard yellowish-white pieces with the shape of ivory in a commodity batch weighing 15.6 kilogram from France. Recipient is a resident in the central City of Da Nang.

The department sent the pieces to The Institute of Tropical Biology for testing. The tests confirmed three ivory-like pieces weighing 14.6kg, are real ivories from African elephants. The ivories are worth over VND3 billion ($141,000).

Ivories from the African animals were listed in the 2014 World Red Book of endangered and in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora which included many endangered, precious and rare plants and animals in urgent need of protection, according to Vietnam Government Decree issued on March 30, 2006.
