Ha Noi police yesterday arrested Noi Bai Cargo Terminal Service JS Company (NCTS) employee Luong Quang Thang, 34, for gambling and attempted theft of a parcel of nearly one million US dollars at Noi Bai International Airport, November 12.

That day, after receiving two parcels from Techcombank for delivery to a branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in Singapore, Thang pretended to place both parcels in the safe as per normal protocol for cargo labeled “VAL” for “valuables”.
 
When other NCTS staff weren’t watching, Thang took the 20.6-kilogram parcel containing US$996,000 from the safe and hid it in a carton among many others, planning to carry it out when he could do so unseen.
 
But NCTS employee Luu Cong Luyen opened the safe to take out the parcels for loading and discovered the bigger one had disappeared.
 
Luyen phoned Thang to ask about the lost parcel and Thang confirmed he had placed both in the safe. Thang then called police to inform them of the parcel’s disappearance.
 
After arrest, Thang confessed he needed money to feed his addiction to gambling, so he gambled at stealing the parcel.  
 
Thang, who resides on Phan Dinh Giot Street, Phuong Liet Ward, Thanh Xuan District, Ha Noi, regularly organized gambling events he would “lure” his coworkers to join. Luyen, 31, was among them and was thus also arrested for gambling.
