HCM City finishes airport street upgradation

The first phase of the project to upgrade the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia-Nguyen Van Troi streets in Ho Chi Minh City has been completed. An opening ceremony was held February 7 for the refurbished street that runs to Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The opening of the upgraded segment of the road that runs through districts Tan Binh, Phu Nhuan and 3 will help reduce congestion at the gateway to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the city People’s Committee permanent deputy chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai said.

Le Quyet Thang, director of Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1, the project investor, said the road segment is 3.8 kilometers long and its width has been doubled to 30 meters.

The 3-4.5 meter wide pavement has been paved with granite and trees planted on both sides of the road. It has also a lighting system with a modern design, Thang said.

While the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia part of the street has been completed, some work, including paving granite on some pavement sections on Nguyen Van Troi Street, is still ongoing and will be completed before April 30.

The project has a total capital of VND852.1 billion (US$46 million), with the site clearance alone costing VND721 billion.

It had met with a lot of difficulties in site clearance as well as in temporary stoppages of work for the city’s environmental hygiene project to install drainage systems, Thang said.
