The southern qualifying competition for the annual robot-design contest for students in the Asia-Pacific region opened in Ho Chi Minh City on April 6 featuring 111 teams from 21 universities and colleges.

It will be held in two rounds from which 12 teams will go through to the final round to be held in the central city of Hue in May. The northern qualifiers in Ha Noi will feature 140 teams and the central qualifiers in Da Nang 46 teams.
The winners of the finals will represent Viet Nam at the 8th ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (Robocon) in Tokyo in August.
In HCMC, the qualifying round is being held at the Rach Mieu Stadium in Phu Nhuan District.
Robocon was first held in 2002.
