To achieve goals concerning cleaner fuels and vehicles in Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Register and the HCMC Department of Environment and Natural Resources have cooperated to launch an inspection campaign on local vehicles, especially motorbikes.

On the first day of the “Inspection Days on Motorbike Exhaust Fumes,” August 27, an inspection of 500 motorbikes in HCMC’s Youth Cultural House parking lot showed that 70 percent of the vehicles met Euro 2 emission standards, enforced by the government since July 2007.

In the “Investigation on Exhaust Fumes of Motorbikes Operating in HCMC” conference held the same day, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuan, Head of the HCMC Department of Environmental Protection, stressed that the city’s three million vehicles and motorbikes have greatly contributed to the unhealthy air quality in the area.

Therefore, many recommendations were given by experts to improve air quality, including enforcing tighter standards, developing new emission technologies and using alternative fuels.

Local authorities and the Viet Nam Register will cooperate to raise public awareness of air pollution and keep tight control on local vehicle emission.
