HCMC Grants Scholarships for Poor Students

Many Ho Chi Minh City-based organizations have offered a large number of scholarships to ethnic minority students and those from disadvantaged families as a gesture toward the importance of providing young people with educational opportunities and thus helping them improve their living conditions.

Poor students are given scholarships

About 120 scholarships worth VND110 million were granted to Cham students living in HCMC on August 21 by the Vietnamese Father Front Committee. An additional 332 scholarships worth VND419 million will also be given to ethnic minorities including those from the Chinese, Cham and Khmer communities.

Following in the footsteps of the Vietnamese Father Front Committee’s “For the Poor” campaign, the HCMC Labor Union has also offered 1,129 scholarships ranging from VND500,000 to VND1.5 million to poor students of all grade levels from primary schools to universities in Binh Chanh, Can Gio, and Nha Be districts and District 9.

On the same day, a charity organization in Binh Thanh District granted 69 Nguyen Huu Tho scholarships varying from VND700,000 to VND1 million, two bicycles, and 500 notebooks to poor students in the region.

Since the beginning of the year, about VND42 billion (approximately US$2.6 million) has been collected for the “For the Poor” fund by the Vietnamese Father Front Committee to help repair 347 houses, build 647 new homes and grant 1,500 Nguyen Huu Tho scholarships to poor students.
