With cold wave conditions sweeping northern Vietnam, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health on January 6 asked all medical clinics to focus on protection from cold and chilly winds for all people, especially the elderly and children.
Medical staff has been asked to warn residents in districts to protect from the cold, especially the elderly and children.
The ministry has asked people to cover their windows in houses to avoid the wind and for people to wear warm clothing when going outside.
People should be warned about accidents of gas poisoning due to indoor coal heating, and burns or deaths among children caused by driving outside in cold weather or asphyxiation of toddlers due to wearing too many warm clothes.
The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment said prolonged severe cold wave conditions have sent many old people suffering respiratory and bone chronic diseases to hospitals. The number of people being hospitalized has increased dramatically in last few days.
In the National Children Hospital in Hanoi around 2,500 children with respiratory disorder, influenza and diarrhea are flooding hospitals. Old people suffering stroke, pneumonia, arthritis, rheumatism, are also on the increase.
