| Vietnam remains in the Hepatitis B high-incidence list, with 15-20 percent of the population suffering from the disease, a recent survey shows.
Dr. Trinh Thi Ngoc, head of the Department of Contagious Diseases at Bach Mai Hospital, said the number of people coming for treatment is always three or four times the number of beds since its cure takes a long time.
Hepatitis B could eventually develop into chronic liver inflammation, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer and cause death.
An estimated 20 percent of Hepatitis B patients die of cirrhosis or cancer.
The Hepatitis B virus is transmitted through bodily fluids, for instance through unprotected sex or sharing contaminated needles.
Mothers also tend to pass it on to their children during childbirth. The disease is much more infectious than HIV. |
