Vietnam to test German baby powder after international scare

Vietnam has not received any warning about baby powder made by German personal and healthcare products maker MAPA containing prohibited substances, a Drug Administration of Vietnam official said April 7.

Vietnam will conduct tests on Nuk baby skin powder

There have been media reports that Korean and Chinese regulators tested 30 baby powder brands and found 12 containing carcinogen asbestos, including the popular German-made NUK brand.

MAPA is owned by French rubber and plastics conglomerate Hutchinson Worldwide.

US and European quality watchdogs have ordered cosmetics manufacturers to remove asbestos, a naturally occurring silicate mineral, from baby powders.

Chinese authorities sealed 48 cans of NUK powder in Suzhou Debao Baby Supplies Co Ltd, the brand's general agent, following an inspection April 4 and ordered it removed from shelves around the country.

In Vietnam, the pharmaceutical regulator and other agencies plan to carry out tests on NUK.
