Speaking at a meeting to review 2008 healthcare performance at the Ministry of Health yesterday in HCM City, the Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Thien Nhan, asked the health sector to implement measures to improve the gender imbalance in healthcare and raise public awareness of family planning.

The deputy PM also called for more social contributions to the healthcare sector.
The ministry needs to build a system to test the quality of examination and treatment. It also needs to cooperate with the education sector to train qualified medical workers and establish high quality health care centers.
According to a plan by the Ministry of Health, the ministry will build an early epidemic warning systemin 2009, and raise the quality of examination and treatment in local clinics to reduce the pressure on hospitals in big cities .
The ministry will also take steps to make medicine more widely available and stabilize the price of drugs nationwide.
The ministry’s targets for 2009 include higher salaries for medical staff, improve food safety and hygiene, and train unqualified medical workers.
