British children’s opera coming to Hanoi

“The Little Sweep,” a famous opera for children by English composer Benjamin Britten, will be performed at the Hanoi Opera House February 3-4.

The opera will be performed by the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre with English subtitles, under British conductor Graham Sutcliffe and directed by Vietnamese People’s Artist Pham Anh Phuong.

“The Little Sweep” is a project of the British Council to introduce Vietnam to British music.
Britten’s operatic masterpiece was written in 1949 and has continued to be popular over the decades, particularly with young audiences.

The opera tells the story of eight-year-old Sam, a chimney sweep who escapes a life of drudgery with help from a group of children at a house he has been ordered to clean.

Free tickets are available at the British Council in Hanoi, 20 Thuy Khue and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre, 11 Ngo Nui Truc from January 6.
