Musicians’ petition for copyrights

Nearly 60 well-known musicians and poets on February 21 delegated the Vietnam Centre for Protection of Music Copyrights, to lodge a petition to the Performing Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to register their copyrights.

It did not seem fair that the Performing Arts Department was granted licenses for the performances of individuals and organisations, while the artists had to prove they had received permission from authors to use their art works. This was against Intellectual Property Law, according to the petition.

Musicians and poets asked the Performing Arts Department to grant licenses to individuals and organisations in accordance with law.

According to the Vietnam Centre for Protection of Music Copyrights, more than 80 per cent of the performances in 2011 and 90 per cent of music shows in Hanoi and its neighboring areas in 2010 violated the copyright law.
