| City Chooses Design for Statue of Self-immolating Monk |
|
| The statue of Thich Quang Duc Bodhisattva will be placed at the intersection of CMT8 and Nguyen Dinh Chieu Streets in District 3 on the very spot where he chose to die. |
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Information has chosen a winner out of the dozen entries in a competition to design a statue of a monk who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon intersection in 1963 in protest against the South Vietnamese regime’s oppression of Buddhists.
After casting, the 6.3m-tall bronze statue of the Thich Quang Duc Bodhisattva sitting inside a heart-shaped flame will be placed at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam and Nguyen Dinh Chieu streets in District 3 on the very spot where he chose to die.
Construction will start in September and should be finished before the year is out.
The statue will reflect the monk's patriotism, determination to fight against oppression and willingness to die for his country's independence and unification.
